My interest in plants started at a very young age. I fought with my parents over weeding in our garden, feeling that the plants declared “weeds” were getting an unfair rap. It was only in my teens that I learned that many of those so-called weeds were medicinal plants, such as dandelion and milk thistle. I taught myself about Western herbal medicine back in the days before the internet, buying every herb book I could get my hands on. This herbal interest expanded into what was then called “Alternative Medicine” and I studied reiki, yoga, nutrition, aromatherapy and anything else I came across.
In college, I had the opportunity to work in a natural health clinic where I experienced acupuncture for the first time. A few treatments resolved a health issue I had dealt with for years and I was hooked. Part of my job was stocking the Chinese herbal pharmacy and I found a home in the Asian herb shops in Chicago’s Chinatown. The smells of the dried herbs and topical liniments set off something in my brain and I knew this was what I wanted to spend my life doing.
After finishing undergrad I attended acupuncture school in Chicago. I spent four years studying full time and in early 2005 finished with a Master of Science degree and in depth knowledge of Chinese Herbs, acupuncture, Western Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology. I have been in private practice ever since and have continued learning about this profound medicine through continuing education courses and apprenticeships in Pregnancy, Gynecology, Fertility, Sports Medicine and Qi Gong.
It’s been 22 years since I first stepped into those Chinese herbal pharmacies in Chicago, and to this day I get excited each time I make an acupuncture treatment plan or write a personalized herbal formula for a patient. I love what I do.
